The Silmarillion is divided in 5 parts.

The first part speak about the creation of the world. The world have been created by illuvatar, the God who have created the Ainurs, beings create by his thought. The world has been formed thanks to the Ainurs's music.

The second parts speak about the gods of middle earth, the Valars and the Maiars, who are Ainurs who decided to come on earth. They prepare the world for the elf and the humans but Melkor, one of the most powerfull Valars, want destroy all the good for take up the power. Melkor decide to create a fortress in the north of the earth and he's going to corrupt the Maiars to make it devils : Balrogs.
